In Essence

The science of behaviour and the skill of training are intricately linked, only by incorporating both of these approaches can kind and effective behaviour modification be achieved. Educating owners and trainers in these skills will ensure they are best able to live a peaceful and happy life with their animals.

Using only fair and ethical methods, through gaining trust and an understanding of the causes of the behaviour problems experienced, Emma works with the owner to shape the behavioural habits of the animal to the desires of the owner. No one technique is promoted, rather the methods used are tailored to the requirements and personality of the animal and owner. By working in this way, a personal behaviour remedial program can be designed for the owner, which best suits their requirements. The aim of Emma’s work is to provide a long term training solution for both animal and owner. Understanding the mind of the animal, its nature, its drives and how it learns allows us the privilege of a relationship with the animal.

About Emma

All my life I have been around animals of all species. From ducks to dogs, from rats to rabbits, and ferrets to horses. Many of the animals we had were rescues, as my family had an 'adopt don't breed' policy to acquiring our pets. It was working with our pets, some which came with behavioural problems, which first ignited my interest in animal behaviour and learning. Since then life seems to have revolved around animals, whether it's training my rats, or doing agility training with my border collie, Jack.

Competing became very important to me during this time, I achieved places on the Pony club area teams for both dressage and horse trails. Furthermore, I competed at affiliated showjumping to Discovery level, British Novice second round and qualified for the Blue Chip National Finals.

After school I had a gap year working for a horse trainer in Hawaii, and working and training with a professional showjumper here in England. Still intrigued by the many facets of animal behaviour I decided to educate myself further and began a degree in Neuroscience at the University of Sussex. During this time I also completed a Certificate in Canine Behaviour with the Animal Care College, the BHS Grooms Certificate and BHSPT Teaching Qualification and a two year Diploma in Practical Equine Behaviour. In the holidays I taught riding and behaviour both privately and at the Spanish Bit Riding School in Slough.

Graduating my degree with honors, and wanting to seek further education and discovery I am now currently researching a PHD investigating the neurological basis of stereotypic behaviours in equines and training in classical riding techniques and ground work with Heather Moffett of Enlightened Equitation (www.enlightenedequitation.com).
